This past weekend saw The Mercyhurst North East Women's Saints kick off the coliseum classic in Herkimer NY. This was Head Coach Matthew Mountford's first game in charge of the Lady Saints and they didn't disappoint running out comfortable 3-0 victory in the opening day with two goals from Sophomore Hannah Piemme #8 and a debut goal for Freshmen Ashley Lundmark #10.
It was a lively start from the Saints who controlled much of the possession in the opening 45 with forwards Krista Tabbachi #4 and Tara Cratsley #9 testing the keeper on multiple occasions as well as the lively pair of Piemme and Lundmark. Holyoke also register a couple of shots on goal keeping GK Hannah Hellebuyck #1 on her toes. The Saints registered 10 shots on goal in the first half and deservedly took the lead when Ashley Lundmark was played through by Elena Banta #11 only to be taken down by the goalkeeper as she went around her. This resulted in a PK for the saints that was expertly dispatched from Lundmark.
The Saints then came out for the second 45 and some neat combinations down the right hand side saw Piemme double the lead just after the hour mark. There was a nervous moment when Holyoke with their first attack of the second half were awarded a PK for a contentious handball however, GK Cierra Barber #0 produced a brilliant one handed save to push it onto the post and back into her grateful grasp to keep the shutout alive.
Five minutes from time some clever passing between Lundmark and Piemme sent the latter through for her second of the game and sealed a wonderful display for the new look Saints. Final score 3-0.
The Saints travel to Lakeland CC Wednesday August 28th to take on the Lakers. Game time at 4pm.
