The Mercyhurst North East Men's Soccer team traveled to Herkimer, NY this past weekend to participate in the Herkimer CCC Coliseum Soccer Club Classic. The first match for the Saints was against SUNY Broome CC on Saturday, August 24th. The Saints would go down early on in the first fifteen minutes of the first half after a SUNY Broome Shot took a deflection and made its way past Saints Goalkeeper, #1 Hector Corrales.
Corrales would make up for the allowed goal by stepping into a midfield role, for the Saints, in the second half and he would level the game at 1-1 by heading home a goal off of a great corner kick service from freshman #11, Fred Kombe. At the end of regulation, the score would remain tied at 1-1, which saw the Saints play their first golden goal overtime period. About 8 minutes into the first overtime period, the MNE Saints would find the winner thru sophomore #13, Justin Fuller with his first goal of the season. The game winning goal was assisted by freshman #8, Emiliano Urbieta.
Mercyhurst North Easts' second game would be played on Sunday, August 25th as they would compete against the hosts, Herkimer CCC Generals. With Herkimer CCC being ranked at #4 in the nation for NJCAA Div. 3 soccer, the Saints knew they were in for a test. Although the score line would end 3-0 in Herkimer's' favor, the Saints held the Generals scoreless for the whole second half and even had a few chances to get a goal back through Freshmen #10 Daniel Benine and #17 Dylan Syzmanski. Both players, however, would not find the back of the net. Solid Defensive performances from freshmen #3, Junior Kabemba, and #18, Noel Dixon, were a great takeaway from the game. Captain and Returning Sophomore Goalkeeper, #1 Hector Corrales, would do his part to keep the Generals to only 3 goals by coming up with 25 saves in the game.
The Saints are back in action this week on Thursday, August 29th, when they host Montgomery County CC, out of Maryland. Kickoff is at 4pm on Thursday at Liguori field in North East.
