The Mercyhurst North East softball team has six members honored with spots on the All-Conference team, announced Tuesday. The Saints had the most of any team in the conference, after going 8-0 and winning the WNYAC championship this season. Four members of the Saints were selected to the first team all WNYAC with two others honored with spots on the second team.
Leading the way for the Saints was sophomore Lei Guthrie. Guthrie was the Saints number one pitcher, going 12-5 on the year with 118 strikeouts in just 107 innings after missing the first 14 games of the year. Her 2.29 ERA was among the best in Division 2 softball. At the plate, Guthrie hit .402 with a team leading 11 home runs and 47 RBIs.
Riplee Burkhart also landed on the first team. The freshman shortstop hit .425 with a team leading 64 runs scored. She also led the team in walks with 24 and steals with 10 while playing every game at shortstop for the Saints.
Alyssa Johnston notched her first team selection by leading the Saints in hitting this year with a .479 batting average. Johnston, a freshman, also hit 16 doubles and scored 31 runs in her first collegiate season.
Justine Dean was the Saints next first team honoree. The freshman had a great all around year both at the plate and in the circle for the Saints. Dean hit .391 with six home runs, 15 doubles, and 41 RBIs. As a pitcher, Dean picked up some tough innings in Florida when Guthrie was out with injury. She carried the extra work nicely, finishing with 123 innings and 81 strikeouts and a 4.38 ERA.
