Mercyhurst scored five runs in the second inning and avoided trouble against NCCC to take the first game of a double header Tuesday afternoon.
The Thunderwolves put runners on in just about every inning to keep pressure on the Saints, but Lei Guthrie limited the damage with some timely pitching.
Guthrie went five innings, striking out six and allowing just one run, which was unearned. Tori Harding pitched the final two innings to seal the victory.
In the decisive second inning, with the Saints trailing by a run, Anna Swartout singled home two runs and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, the Saints scored two more on an error.

Justine Dean threw a no-hitter to help the Saints clinch the WNYAC championship as the Saints swept a double header on Tuesday.
Dean went all five innings, allowing just two baserunners. In the fourth, a misplayed fly ball was went for an error, and the runner was thrown out trying to advance to second. In the fifth, a walk allowed another runner as Dean faced only 16 batters. She struck out five in her win.
At the plate, Dean hit a double and a home run to lead the Saints attack. Ayla Bragg also homered for the Saints.
With the win, the Saints wrap up regular season play with a record of 26-15 and 8-0 in the conference. Mercyhurst will host the Region Tournament this weekend at Vineyard Field. The Saints will take on Orange at 1pm and Rhode Island at 3pm on Saturday.
