The Saints poor defensive effort spoiled an otherwise nice pitching effort by Lei Guthrie Saturday night in Florida.
Guthrie ended up with seven strikeouts on just seven hits but a couple of costly miscues by the Saints infield allowed several unearned runs.
Things got off to a shaky start in the first inning when Mott scored two runs without getting a hit or even a ball out of the infield.
Trailing 4-0, Mercyhurst rallied back with on RBI singles by Kaelyn Shea and Hannah Larkin in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Heather Mueller pulled the Saints within one run on a home run to left field.
However, in the sixth, the Saints defense made some more mistakes and allowed Mott to tack on some insurance runs to put the game away.
Mackenzie Hawley and Guthrie both had two hits to lead the Saints, who finished with 8 hits in the game.
