Lei Guthrie had an impressive college debut Friday as she fired a one hit shutout in her first start as a collegian.
Guthrie stuck out four and didn't walk a batter in her seven inning outing, which featured four strikeouts and a very efficient 56 pitch-count.
Mercyhurst opened their season with a run in the bottom of the first to get ahead of the Jayhawks. Leadoff batter Mackenzie Hawley tripled to start the game and would score on a sac fly by Grace Edwards.
In the second, Heather Muller walked and stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a ground ball from Kaylee Brooks.
MNE would complete the scoring in the fifth, when Edwards singled and Guthrie and Aren Schwab hit back-to-back doubles to chase home two more runs.
Megan Minihane, Schwab, Hawley, and Guthrie all had two hits for the Saints.
