Former Saints standout baseball player Cameron Balego was selected in the 30th round, 915th overall selection, by the Chicago Cubs in the 2017 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Wednesday, June 14.
Balego played shortstop for the Saints in 2014 and helped lead them to a Region III Championship and an appearance in the NJCAA District Tournament. During his first year with the Saints, Balego played in 41 games, had 42 hits including 25 RBI's and recorded a .331 batting average.
Balego played his sophomore year on for NCAA Division II Mercyhurst University. Balego had a stellar senior year campaign with the Lakers as he hit .367 in 46 games with 14 doubles, 10 home runs and 48 RBI's.
After completion of his college career, Balego recieved numerous postseason awards for his senior season. He was named First Team All-Atlantic Region and was named to the All-PSAC First team for the second straight season.
Cameron Balego is the first baseball player in program history for the Saints to be selected in the MLB Draft.
